Desertec stands for the overall vision of supplying a large part of the world with sustainable power, by tapping into the energy potential of the desert.
With its 57 partners in 16 countries, Dii aims to turn the Desertec vision into reality. Founded in 2009, the industrial initiative focuses its activities on the creation of a market for renewable energy which incorporates the desert regions of North Africa and the Middle East (MENA) as well as Europe (EU) on an industrial scale. Such activities include the development of integrated energy markets in EUMENA and the identification of suitable technologies for producing and transmitting electricity.
Achieving this mission requires working on different levels. In addition to its long term strategy “Desert Power 2050”, Dii is also developing individual country strategies, which in turn form the basis for concrete Reference Projects. These Reference Projects are important to demonstrate that it is possible and practical in economic, technical and regulatory terms to generate energy in the desert and transport this power across borders.
Power generated from sun and wind is primarily intended to meet the local demand in North Africa and the Middle East, but could also be exported to Europe. Dii´s effort as an enabler and catalyser for desert power can directly and indirectly benefit not only the Dii shareholders and associated partners but all interested companies, initiatives, states and national economies involved.
