About Fronteers, the organisation

Fronteers conference is organised by a team of Fronteers, the organisation, which does many other things, such as workshops, regular meet-ups and an online job board.

Founded in 2007, Fronteers is the non-profit trade organisation of Dutch front-end developers. Its goals include the professionalisation of our trade, (improved) recognition of the front-end discipline, and improving the position of Dutch front-end developers in their company and the web design/development world in general. More about Fronteers.

Unfortunately we do not have the time to help foreign front-enders find work in the Netherlands. The most we can do is refer you to our job board, which is mostly in Dutch.

Membership, activities, and support

At this moment we have about 500 members.

Our main activities are organising informal meetings and workshops as well as a conference, and reaching out to educational institutions. We also take part in the review of the Dutch Web Guidelines.

Unfortunately several other plans, such as devising a form of certification for front-end engineers, advising freelancers on contracts and such, and international outreach, had to be shelved due to a crippling lack of volunteers.

Fronteers is supported by the PIBN, the Dutch organisation of web development agencies, as well as several of its member companies, notably and Mirabeau. Many other companies have hosted (and paid for) an informal Fronteers meeting.

Mostly Dutch

Currently Fronteers works within the Netherlands. We have a few (Dutch-speaking) Belgian members, but due to the fact that 90% of Fronteers' activities take place in Dutch, the organisation is less-than-optimally accessible for people who do not speak our beautiful language.

There is one exception to this rule: our conference is entirely in English and has attracted many delegates from beyond the Dutch language area.

There are currently no plans to develop English-language activities or translate (parts of) this site into English. Thus, Fronteers remains aimed at the Dutch-speaking front-end community.

International outreach

The decision to work mainly in Dutch was originally supposed to be a temporary measure. The founders' idea was to test the concept in the Netherlands and subsequently export it to other countries.

Unfortunately, developing the organisation and executing all plans we have turns out to take so much time that we have been unable to work on international outreach. It is unlikely that this situation will change in the near future.

That said, we're always interested in discussing potential Fronteers branches in other countries. The current Dutch Fronteers kernel will not take an active role in founding them, though; the most you can expect is some general advice.
