One great thing about web development is that you can become productive very quickly, even if you don't know a lot about the underlying technologies. Web servers are one such area - web developers rely on them, but many don't know exactly how they work. This class is for those who'd like a deeper understanding so they can work confidently on bigger applications, and the best part is that all you need is an understanding of JavaScript.

Node.js is a server-side implementation of the same JavaScript you use in the browser, and in this class we'll use it to write a web server. This may sound intimidating, but just head over to the Node project's site to see how little code it actually takes. Once we've got our server built, we'll write a small web application and serve it to the world! (Or at least to everyone else in class.)
