We are very pleased to welcome you to Amsterdam for the 17th Congress of EHA. An exciting program has been compiled by the Scientific Program Committee and Advisory Board under the leadership of Tony Green.  A variety of scientific and educational sessions aim to cover a wide spectrum of hematology.  This year talks have been color-coded in the program to indicate the topics covered, and we hope this will help you identify sessions of particular interest.

In the Plenary Sessions on Saturday and Sunday Lou Staudt and Manuel Esteller will describe their studies of the molecular mechanisms underlying lymphoma and AML; Timm Schroeder will talk about the enormous power of single-cell imaging for characterizing normal and malignant hematopoiesis; Nancy Andrews will describe recent advances in our understanding of iron metabolism; and Katherine High will review the exciting current status of gene therapy for hemophilia.

The satellite symposium day on Thursday highlights the successful partnerships that EHA enjoys with the pharmaceutical industry and with several other organizations. This year, 24 satellite symposia will cover many of the latest advances in patient management.

During the congress you are welcome at the EHA Street where you can find all the information about EHA, membership and its activities. Discover what more EHA can do for you!

Friday is as usual a busy day with many sessions taking place simultaneously, including first rate Education Sessions ranging from basic science and translational research through to clinical practice. These are complemented by two already well established features of our congress: the Laboratory Hematology Workshop in the morning and the Molecular Hemopoiesis Workshop in the afternoon. Lunches on Friday and Saturday can be spent by attending one of the feisty lunch debates or informative Meet-the-Experts groups. In addition, the joint symposium with the European School of Haematology (ESH) addresses communication issues between doctors and patients, including role-play scenarios with actors.

During the opening ceremony on Friday, Jesús San Miguel (University Hospital Salamanca, Spain) will receive the José Carreras Award and present his lecture. Scientific grants and fellowships will be awarded during this Ceremony. The day is rounded up by the poster session where many posters will be presented.

Saturday and Sunday are filled with the latest science in the Hematology-in-Focus and simultaneous sessions selected from over 2,000 submitted abstracts. The six best abstracts will be presented in the Presidential Symposium on Saturday. This year’s Jean Bernard Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Laurent Degos (Haute Autorité de Santé, Saint-Denis La Plaine Cedex, France) for his lifetime contributions to the advancement of hematology. The EHA-ASH Symposium will focus on access to standard drugs and treatment in different geographical areas and the symposium with the Japanese Society of Hematology focuses on platelet disorders. The Patient Advocacy Session investigates the relationship between clinicians and patients. During this session the topic “Quality of Life - do patients perceive Quality of Life the same way as you do?” will be discussed from different perspectives.

The Poster session takes place early on Saturday evening and provides an ideal opportunity to meet the authors and for the authors to present their data during the popular poster walks. Lastly the Social Event on Saturday evening will be a party to remember at the recently re-opened Dutch maritime museum! Buy your tickets at the Information Desk.

We look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam for what we are confident will be another highly enjoyable EHA Congress.
