Welcome to the website of "The 2011 International Conference on Intelligent Robotics and Applications"!
We are delighted to announce the International Conference on Intelligent Robotics and Applications for the fourth time. In 2011 the ICIRA will take place in Aachen, Germany, so the ICIRA 2011 will take place in Europe for the first time. Between December 06, 2011 and December 09, 2011 the ICIRA 2011 will be held at the Tivoli Business Center (Aachen, Germany). The event is organized by the institute cluster IMA / ZLW & IfU of the RWTH Aachen University. The ICIRA 2011 welcomes companies, universities, publishers, and researchers. During the entire conference an accompanying exhibition will take place.
Aachen is the most western city of Germany. It is known for its historical background and the associated cultural and architectural heritages. For example, the landmark of Aachen, the Aachener Dom, and the cathedral treasury were included in the UNESCO list of world heritage as the first German cultural monument and the second cultural monument worldwide. In Aachen the largest university of technology in Germany and one of the most renowned technical universities in Europe - the RWTH Aachen University - is situated.
The RWTH Aachen University was founded as a polytechnical institute (Polytechnikum) in 1870 by an initiative of the Prussian heavy industry. The proximity of Aachen to the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg and its variety of cultural heritages has placed the University in a unique position for international collaboration with other educational and research institutions as well as with businesses and the industry.
Nowadays, the RWTH Aachen University has been awarded funding from all three funding lines within the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. After the Excellence Initiative was passed by the German federal and state governments in 2005, the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) was given responsibility for running the initiative together with the German Science Council. With this program, the RWTH Aachen is provided with a unique and valuable opportunity to substantially sharpen its scientific profile. Additionally, the RWTH Aachen, whose strengths lie in engineering and the natural sciences, ranks first in external research funding.
With the ICIRA 2011 we, on one hand, would like to forge a link between different disciplines developing and/or using robotics and its applications. On the other hand, we would like to form a connection between different perspectives on the field of robotics – from the fundamental research to the usage of robotics.
The theme of the upcoming ICIRA will be “Improving Robot Behavior”. We look forward to discussing a variety of topics on robotic research and their applications under different scientific perspectives with you at the ICIRA 2011 in Aachen.
