After making a connection with our partner Palace Sports and Entertainment, at the inaugural Michigan Sport Business Conference, a group of students was able to turn a class marketing project into a major piece of the Pistons marketing strategy. Others students were able to build relationships that turned into internships, find new mentors, and start new business ventures. This is the power of the MSBC.
In February 2011, what started as a simple idea to connect various resources on campus, became an initiative to inspire creativity and innovation in the sport industry. Founding the MSBC took a great deal of dedication, creativity, and strategy from a group of passionate individuals who, from the beginning, believed in the MSBC’s mission. These initial MSBC Brand Messiah’s did not measure the MSBC’s success on the number of tickets sold, the numbers of speakers brought in, or the revenue generated from partnerships and ticket sales. They focused on the relationships built, the jobs secured, the business conducted, and the new ideas or ventures that spawned from the MSBC. Impact on the sport business community and the world is our number one priority and will continue to fuel the passion of future MSBC Brand Messiahs.
As the MSBC moves into the future we will continue to empower the current and future sport business community. Undergraduate students will have more opportunities to hear from and build relationships with the industries brightest, and industry professionals will have a space to foster ideas, conduct business, and mentor aspiring college students. However, in order for the MSBC to reach its full potential we as the University of Michigan community must continue to support this initiative. The MSBC exemplifies ‘The Michigan Difference’ and will extend our brand in the exciting field of sport business. Whether asked to speak, sponsor, attend, or mentor a student we must see the importance of our role.
We would like to give our sincere appreciation to the administration at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology and Stephen M. Ross School of Business, the Michigan Department of Athletics, corporate sponsors, and the alumni who continue to empower our team and make the MSBC an initiative that lives well beyond our time. With out all of your continued support, none of the MSBC success stories would be possible.
