Open Source Junction 5 focuses on open source software and the public sector.
Over the past two years, the UK government has been making a sustained effort to transform the use of technology in the public sector, not only to reduce costs, but also to deliver sustained value and meet user needs. Open source has been a key component in this strategy, with the Cabinet Office issuing policy and guidance to the public sector that levels the playing field for open source solutions. The Open Standards Principles made it clear that ICT standards would not be used to exclude open source solutions; while the Open Source Procurement Toolkit gave public sector organisations tools and guidance to put the new policies into practice.
All areas of the public sector – including central government, local government, health, police and prisons, education – are involved in this process.
