The field of electronic structure theory has in the last fifty years developed into a mature scientific discipline. The field has developed concepts and insights of importance for understanding and describing the quantum mechanical behavior of electrons and nuclei in molecules. Furthermore, these insights have been used to develop powerful and efficient tools in the form of computer programs, which are being used to solve scientific and technological problems of importance of many fields of science, including chemistry, physics, biochemistry and material science.
However, the field of electronic structure methods is certainly not a discipline, where all the major concepts and methods already have been developed. The strive to describe larger and more complex systems as well as to increase accuracy is coupled with the continued hardware development to shift the balance between different methods and is allowing truly novel methods.
Through lectures by a number of the foremost researchers in the field of electronic structure theory, it is the purpose of this conference to cover the recent advances in this field. Furthermore, the conference will honor and celebrate Prof. Poul Jørgensen and his scientific achievements on the occasion of his seventy year birthday earlier this year.
